Read This Book: Illusions, by Richard Bach
Any attempt to describe this book, and why you should read it, would not do it any justice. The best thing I can do is give you an excerpt from the Foreward. If you like this, then you need to go buy / rent / steal this book. (Or, you can borrow it from me.)
EXCERPT:
“Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river. The current of the river swept silently over them all – young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self.
Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocksat the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current what each had learned from birth.
But one creature said at last, “I am tired of clinging! Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging I shall die of boredom.”
The other creatures laughed and said, “Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you shall die quicker than boredom!”
But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks.
Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.
And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, “See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come to save us all!”
And the one carried in the current said, “I am no more Messiah than you. The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.”
But they cried the more, “Saviour!” all the while clinging to the rocks, and when they looked again he was gone, and they were left alone making legends of a Saviour.”
The rest of the book is an amazing story. It has nothing to do with these creatures, but this foreward gets your brain “in position” to really get what the story is all about.
Introducing: “Bridges” by Frank Mahler
In the mid-nineties, my Uncle Frank gave me a rough draft of a book he was working on. He was an avid reader, particularly loving Stephen King and Dean Koonz-style novels. I’m quite sure he wanted to be a writer himself, and had began working on a book called “Bridges”. He gave it to me to look over, and give my opinion on. He has since passed away, and sadly never quite finished the book.
I do still have the original rough draft, though, and I feel bad letting such a good story sit gathering dust in my closet. A substantial portion of the book was finished. So, I’ve added a page called “Bridges” to this site. (Look over there to the right, under “About Us”.)
I’m going to be publishing it chapter by chapter on that page. The thing is LONG, and I don’t know how long it will take me to get the whole thing typed up, but it’ll be a fun story for you to follow as I publish it.
Chapter 1 is published now, and I’ll most likely put Chapter 2 up later tonight, with Chapter 3 soon to follow. Check it out!
Geeking Out for Breaking Dawn
So, in case you’ve been living in a cave, you’ve heard of the Twilight books. Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and now Breaking Dawn. The books are awesome. I know, I know, it’s supposedly a ‘young adult fiction’ book, but I DON’T CARE. I love it. It was written for 30+ year old women, the authors publishers just don’t realize it.
I only just got into them a couple months ago, by downloading them from Audible.com. It only took about 1 hour of listening before I was totally sucked in. I listed to the first three books – all 40+ hours of them – within two weeks. I finished them in March, and have been waiting, impatiently, for the 4th & final book to come out. Well, it did today. At midnight.
I had reserved a copy of the audio-disks to purchase, rather than wait a few extra weeks for the downloadable version to show up on Audible.com. I was too afraid to get spoiled, and wanted to know the rest of the story right away. So I showed up to Barnes & Noble at 11pm tonight & got a wristband. I got in line around 11:30pm, and didn’t actually get to make my purchase until at least 12:40 am. It was a madhouse, with the line going outside, around the side and behind the building. But hey: they gave us free cake!
So, now that I’ve uploaded the first few disc’s onto my iPod (while I’ve been typing this), it’s time for me to go lay in my comfy bed, and finally begin to listen. YAY!
Oh, and I’m Team Edward, 100%. I don’t get those “Team Jacob” people. Seriously!
