Waiting waiting waiting waiting… then finally done waiting!

Okay, so my Vet promised that today would be the day she called with Bug’s test results. That was on Friday, and as you know from the last post, I’ve been driving myself absolutely batty ever since with worry and more worry and OH YEAH… even more worry

This morning I woke up, and immediately begun to feel anxiety. Call now call now call now call now was all my brain could think. I struggled to even get thru making it process “brush teeth” and “attempt to do a little work”. I was completely absorbed in waiting for that phone call. So much, I even had a headache and felt a bit dizzy. (Anxiety problems… who me?)

10am passed… then noon, then 3:00 pm, then 5:30, then 6:45 and OH MY GOD WHY HASN’T SHE CALLED YET?!

I had worked myself into an absolute mess of worry, convinced that I’d get the phone call and she’d say “Bug is dying, say your goodbyes, sorry.”

But then finally, at 7:20pm, she called.

It wasn’t bad news, it was pretty much as expected, if not a little better. (Well, as expected before I went crazy.) Bug’s test results came back, and sure enough, he’s Diabetic. But the rest of his organs and systems are totally fine, which was what my real anxiety was all about. (Especially when she dropped the K-word {kidney} as a possible organ that can be hurt by Prednisolone, since that’s what I lost my beloved Tap to 4 years ago.)

But yes, the blood sugar curve test was in the Diabetic range. However, it was on the low end of the diabetic range, which is AWESOME news.

He’s been transitioning to wet food since Friday, and loving every single smelly bite of it. I’ve since learned about how horrible dry kibble food is for cats, and how it could possibly be the main cause of almost every common cat ailment. (If you feed your cat dry food STOP NOW!) So his transition to a low-carbohydrate, high-protein wet food will be essential to not only his diabetic health, but his health overall. (And hopefully this switch will prevent Sooki from developing any major illnesses!) There’s even a chance that by switching his food, and by transitioning him off Prednisolone and onto a different medication, that his blood sugar will be low enough to manage it with minimal insulin, possibly even NONE AT ALL.

So the plan is this: We’re going to feed him & medicate him this new way for a week, then check his blood sugar levels again. I have an appointment on Tuesday (Election Day!) with the Vet to test it again, and then possibly start him on insulin. OR NOT. Either way I’m okay with it. I have myself a little sugar-kitty, and we’ll be fine with or without insulin treatments. :)

So, now the Presidential Race is officially not the main thing I’m thinking about for next Tuesday. I’ll be sending low blood sugar energy everywhere around me, in hopes for an easy treatment for my beloved kitty.

Hi Jen, I’m sorry to hear about your kitty. I read your blog and enjoy your Flickr photos. 1.5 years ago I found out that my cat Bebe had hyperhtyroidism, she was very sick. I treat her everyday with Methimazole, but I don’t regret it at all. I love my cats like you do! Tale care and lots of love to your kitty!
